MFT 542A - Substance Abuse, the Individual, and Family Dynamics2 credits This course will introduce the student to the scope and depth of substance abuse and dependence as a biochemical and psychological addiction and its impact on the individual and the family. Pathogenic sources, therapeutic issues and treatment interventions associated with alcoholism and substance abuse in relation to culture, gender, interpersonal and family dynamics will be examined. Childhood and adolescent developmental issues in relation to families and substance abuse will be presented. The neurological effects of psychoactive drugs on the brain and how these biological changes impact affect, mood and behavior will be explored. This course will examine both theory and clinical practice. MFT requirement for graduation; registration preference given to MFT students. Prerequisite(s): MFT 520 and MFT 510 |
